Dr. Thennavan M, PhD.
Structural & Earthquake Engineering | Seismic Protection and Vibration Control.
Bio:
I am a structural and earthquake engineering researcher working on passive and tunable devices for seismic protection and vibration control. I completed my Ph.D. at IIT Madras in 2024 and a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Naples Federico II, in the Department of Structures for Engineering and Architecture. My work combines analytical modelling, nonlinear finite element simulation in ABAQUS and OpenSees, and large-scale experimental testing with digital image correlation, applied to hysteretic damping devices, filled steel and composite sections, and functionally graded materials for structural use. I hold one granted Indian patent and three filed applications, including a double-acting spring and wire-rope energy-dissipating damper of my own design (Application No. 202541130528), and I was awarded a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Seal of Excellence in 2025.
Current Works:
Aug 2026 — Elected Member, American Society of Civil Engineers (M.ASCE)
Aug 2026 — Complete specification in preparation for Indian patent application 202541130528
2026 — Analytical hysteretic modelling of a double-acting spring and wire-rope damper; journal paper in preparation
Dec 2025 — Indian patent application 202541130528 filed, Chennai Patent Office
2025 — Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship Seal of Excellence
